GIFT LIST MANAGEMENT

How does a Gift List work?

Gift Lists are a simple way for couples to pick gifts which they actually want which makes it easy for guests to buy wedding gifts which they know will be appreciated. All you need to do is:

    1. Pick the items you'd like on your gift list.
    2. Let your guests know where your gift list and wedding website are located.
    3. Nearer your wedding date we will confirm the payment arrangements with you.
We'll email you to let you know every time a gift has been purchased from your gift list - but if you want your gifts to be a surprise you can opt not to receive these emails. You can also check your gift list online any time you want to see what has been bought. Once an item has been purchased it is removed from your list and cannot be purchased by another guest.

When should I start setting up my list?

You will need to set up your gift list before you send out your wedding invitations - we recommend that you set up your gift list about 3 months before your wedding. If you want your guests to be able to view your website but you don't want them to be able to view your gift list until you have finished setting it up, you can set a date on which your gift list becomes available. You'll find this setting in 'Edit Gift List Settings'.

Can I get a printed copy of the online product catalogue?

With so much choice, sometimes you may prefer to print some sections of the online catalogue and browse through them offline.

If you're viewing a section of the product catalogue and select to print it, you'll get a nice, print-friendly version which is easy to read.

What if I want to add something else to my gift list which isn't in your online catalogue?

No problem! If you would like to customise your gift list or add a special item you can request a custom gift online. You can automatically add gifts of money to your gift list which you can personalise with your own text and pictures. All you need to do is decide on your gift name, description, price and image and submit them online. For example, you could add custom gifts for specific trips on your honeymoon or let guests contribute money towards a special item.

To find out more or request a custom gift you need to log in, select 'Gift List' from the menu on the left-hand side then select the option at the bottom of the middle section of the page.

Can I set gifts as favourites?

Yes. When you're looking at your list you'll see the option beside each gift to mark it as a favourite.

Can I change what's on my gift list?

Yes. Simply remove gifts from your list or add more gifts, at any time. When a gift has been added to your gift list there is the option to change the quantity required. Once you have done this, select 'update' and your gift list will be updated with the correct quantity. To remove a gift from your gift list select '0' as the quantity required and select 'update'.

How and when does our gift list go live?

When you start adding items to your gift list they become available for guests to view and purchase online. In practice your list will only really "go live" when you start letting your guests know that your gift list is at Nearly Married. If you want your guests to be able to view your website but you don't want them to be able to view your gift list until you have finished setting it up, you can set a date on which your gift list becomes available. You'll find this setting in 'Edit Gift List Settings'.

How do guests find out about our gift list and wedding website?

With your wedding invitations you may want to let your guests know that they can find out about your wedding and your gift list at www.nearlymarried.co.uk Click here to see sample text and wording suggestions which you can use, personalise and print on to your stationery. We can also provide pre-printed invitation inserts for you to send to your guests, if required, free of charge. Please email us to let us know how many you would like - you'll need one card per invitation, not per guest.

How do guests log in to our gift list and wedding website?

Guests need to know the date of the wedding and the surname of at least one member of the couple. This information needs to be entered in the right-hand side of the homepage and they will then be able to access your website and gift list.

What about guests who don't have internet access?

Guests who don't have internet access can call us on 0845 257 8529 and we'll be happy to provide them with a copy of your gift list or to help them with their purchase. Copies of the gift list can be emailed, faxed or posted, if requested.

Can anyone view my gift list?

It's your choice. Some gift list companies make your gift list freely available, but at Nearly Married you can choose whether to password protect your wedding website (which contains your gift list) or not. Please note that the password for your wedding website is not the same as password which you use to log in to your wedding at Nearly Married and you can choose your own password for your website.

If you choose not to password protect this anyone can view your wedding website and gift list. By password protecting your wedding website only those people who know the password can access your website and gift list.

Can we leave a personal message which guests see when they access our gift list?

You can add lots of info and pictures for your guests on your free wedding website at Nearly Married. Whether you want to thank them in advance, mention that you're looking forward to seeing them on your big day or explain that you're looking for a financial contribution for the sofa you've chosen - this is a good chance to let them know. You can leave a message on your homepage or add a gift list page to your website.

Can guests leave a message for us when they purchase a gift?

Yes, when a guest purchases a gift they have the option to leave a personal message for you. You can see personal messages when you view your purchased gifts and they will also be displayed in automatic emails notifying you of purchases.

Can we accept donations to our preferred charities?

Yes, you can add these by going to the 'Charity Gifts' option on the righ-hand menu and add as many vouchers as you like. We recommend that you add some info to your free wedding website at Nearly Married (either on your homepage or set up a new page) to let your guests know which charity or charities you are supporting. Another option is to add custom gifts of money which specify the name of your chosen charity.

We will pass the money to you so that you can give it to the charity directly and they can then claim Gift Aid relief on the donation if this is relevant (which means that your gift becomes even more valuable to them).

A Money Fee applies to gifts of money (such as charity donations) which is deducted from your final amount raised. Under our flexible fee scheme you can choose whether this is paid by your guests or shared between you and your guests instead. Please see our Terms & Conditions for Couples for current charges.

It’s easy to request a change to the fee settings for your gifts of money. All you have to do is log in to your wedding, select ‘edit gift list settings’ and select your preferred option in the ‘Request Flexible Fees for Gifts of Money’ section. We will notify you by email when your fee settings have been changed. Please note that if you select this flexible charge option it applies to any charity donations and other gifts of money such as honeymoon gifts, but if you add other gifts which are not a gift of money, our normal charges will apply to these other gifts.

What happens with monetary and honeymoon donations?

If you've received monetary donations (either general monetary donations or any type of honeymoon donation) we will normally pay this to you when your gift list is closed. Further payments may be made if requested, subject to meeting our minimum payment level.

A Money Fee applies to gifts of money which is deducted from your final amount raised. Under our flexible fee scheme you can choose whether this is paid by your guests or shared between you and your guests instead.

Please note that if you select this flexible charge option you are not restricted to only having money and honeymoon gift choices on your gift list, but if you add other gifts which are not a gift of money, our normal charges will apply to these other gifts.

Honeymoon gifts are simply a gift of money so we collect the money for your honeymoon on your behalf and pay the money to you so that you can spend it as you wish - we will not book your honeymoon or arrange any of the specific honeymoon gifts which guests give to you.

Please note that when we pay money directly in to your bank account it can take up to four working days to become available as cleared funds in your account.

How do we know what's been bought from our gift list?

We'll email you to let you know every time a gift has been purchased from your gift list. The email will tell you what has been purchased and who bought it - but if you want your gifts to be a surprise you can opt not to receive these emails.

To view gifts which have been purchased from your gift list you should log in to your wedding at Nearly Married, select "view your gift list" (from the right-hand menu) and you will then see various options along the top. You can opt to view all gifts, all available gifts or all purchased gifts and you can choose the order in which you would prefer to view this information. If a guest purchases a number of different gifts you may prefer to view purchases by 'payments' which will group different gifts from each guest together.

This information is only available to you, so your guests won't know what has been bought or who has bought gifts for you.

Can we see totals for our gift list?

Yes, you can find out various totals for your gift list. When you are logged in click on 'view your gift list'. At the top of your gift list you'll see the 'Total value of gifts in this category' - this value represents the total value of all the gifts (both available and purchased gifts) on your gift list. When you change your view, the total will change to show the value of gifts in that category. For example, if you click to view purchased gifts, the 'Total value of gifts in this category' will be for purchased gifts.

How do we change the settings for automatic email notification of purchased gifts?

It's easy to change the settings for automatic email notification. Log in to your wedding hub at Nearly Married and select "Edit Gift List Settings" where you'll find the option to change automatic notification.

Our families are keen to know what relatives have bought - can they access our gift list?

It's up to you. You can give your password details to your family so that they have the same access to your gift list as you. Alternatively you can forward relevant notification emails to them or print a copy of gifts purchased and give that to them instead.

How and when does our gift list close?

Having a gift list is a great experience, and the generosity of your friends and family will probably surprise you. But, it does have to come to an end. We won't normally start purchasing your gifts for you until you have finalised your list so that we know you're happy with all your gifts. All that's involved in finalising your list is reviewing your final gift choices and confirming other details such as delivery and payment arrangements, if relevant.

The sooner you finalise your gift list, the quicker you will receive your gifts. We recommend that you finalise your list just after your wedding. If you have a few days to spare after your wedding before your honeymoon this is an ideal time to review your gift list. We will contact you before your wedding to make arrangements for finalising your gift list.

We will email you with a summary of your gifts so that you can finalise which gifts you want. If any of your gifts are no longer available from our suppliers we will tell you and will often be able to recommend substitutes. At this point you will usually be able to change your mind about gifts too (with the exception of gifts which we have already purchased on your behalf with your agreement). For example, if your guests buy part of a dinner set you can choose whether to buy the rest of the set yourselves or to buy other gifts instead to the same value of purchases made. You may also wish to purchase other gifts.

Once you have finalised your gift list we will close your gift list which means that guests can not access your gift list or purchase gifts although they will still be able to view your wedding website. You will still be able to log in to your wedding have full access to your gift list once it has been closed.

"Thank You" card management

To help you keep track of who you have sent a Thank You card to, you can use our free, integrated Thank You tool. Beside each purchased gift you'll see the option to log whether or not you've sent a thank you card. Alternatively you may prefer to log this info against each individual guest record (which you'll find under "Guest List" in your wedding hub).

Can I get a print-friendly version of my gift list?

Yes. When you print your gift list you'll get a nice, print-friendly version which is easy to read.

FEES & PAYMENT

Is it a free service?

We offer a free service to couples, although some optional parts of our service may incur an administration fee, for example: delivery to outlying areas, premium timed delivery options, lengthy storage times, some custom gifts. Full details are available in our Terms & Conditions for Couples.

Guests pay the price displayed for each gift plus an administration fee of £3.50 per purchase (irrespective of how many items are purchased) to cover the cost of managing your gift list. No admin fee applies if a guest solely buys gifts of money.

A Money Fee applies to gifts of money (such as monetary, honeymoon and charity donations) to cover processing costs. Flexible charges are available for gifts of money. If you would prefer one of these flexible charge options, please email us and we will arrange this for you. Please note that if you select this flexible charge option you are not restricted to only having money, honeymoon gifts and charity donations, but if you add other gifts which are not a gift of money, our normal charges will apply to these other gifts.

There are no additional delivery charges to guests.

When will we receive our gift list funds?

Up to two free transfers of funds will be made to you. A final payment will usually be made to you about a week after your wedding when your gift list is closed - but if you wish to keep your list open for longer than that, just let us know. You can request a transfer of funds from within the wedding hub - you'll find this option in 'edit gift list settings'.

If you require more than two transfers this is subject to a minimum £250 balance transfer and a fee of £3.50 for each additional transfer will be deducted.

What payment options are available?

We accept all major credit and debit cards as well as payment by cheque or bank transfer. Your guests will receive confirmation of their purchase by email or post. We can accept payment from credit and debit cards which are registered worldwide. All prices are displayed in sterling and all payments are made in sterling. Full Terms and Conditions for guests are available on this site.

How secure are payments made on the site?

Processing payments properly and securely is very important to us. All payments are handled by our secure payment partner, Protx who are one of the UK's leading payment processing companies, so personal information and card details are safe and secure.

All sensitive personal and financial information is transmitted and stored securely and will never be seen by human eyes. It is encrypted using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol using the encryption key length of 128-bits provided by Verisign.

    GIFT LIST ETIQUETTE

We don't want our guests to feel obliged to buy us a gift. What should we do?

Guests understand when couples get married it's because they love each other - not because they're looking for wedding gifts! If you decide to have a gift list you can choose your wording carefully to ensure that your guests don't feel obliged to buy a gift. For example, a popular phrase to use is "It's your presence, not your present, that we want!"

Even if you don't want your guests to buy gifts for you, you'll find that most people still want to give a gift as they feel it's the right thing to do - and they want to mark the occasion with a gift. Without a gift list to guide your guests you could find yourselves inundated with gifts which you don't really want. If you really don't want any gifts for yourselves, why not consider charity gifts?

Should we send details of our gift list with our wedding invitations?

When couples started using gift lists it was not accepted etiquette to include details of a gift list with a wedding invitation. However, as gift lists have become increasingly popular, times have changed and so has the etiquette. It has become much more the norm - and it's simpler - to let guests know where a gift list has been set up and saves guests trying to contact the bridal party to find out. It's highly unlikely that guests will take offence.

If you don't feel comfortable including your gift list information with invitations, telling your guests about your wedding website at Nearly Married is a great - and discrete - way for guests to get the all-important details about your wedding and your gift list.

Remember that guests who receive invitations often feel that they have to give you a gift even if they can't come to your wedding. Why not call them or send a card to let them know your good news, instead of formally sending an invitation which they would need to reply to?

Some couples include this information with day invites and omit it for evening invitations. When you add information to your wedding invitations you can word it carefully to show that you do not expect guests to have to buy you a gift, although most of them will! And if you don't feel comfortable including your gift list information with invitations, why not tell them about your wedding website at Nearly Married - it's a discrete way for them to find out about your gift list.

Should our evening guests be given details of our gift list?

If you don't expect your evening guests to give you a gift, don't include information about your gift list with their invitations. If you've got a wedding website this is a great way for them to find out if you have a gift list, without having to ask.

Is it OK to ask for money for general use or honeymoon?

Many couples already have the traditional household items which were often given as gifts such as toasters, kettles, towels and bedding. That's why couples often feel that it would suit them better to ask for money which they can use towards something special. Perhaps they're saving towards a deposit on a house, furniture or a new kitchen and they would appreciate money towards that. It is becoming far more the norm for couples to ask for money - but our advice is to let guests know what the money will be spent on so that your guests feel that they've contributed towards a specific item rather than giving money which could be spent on household bills or your entertainment expenses!

Our gift list is unusual - how should we explain this to guests?

Many couples enclose an information sheet when they send out their invitations. The information sheet could have all sorts of important information such as directions, transport and accommodations options and information about the gift list. You might be able to add this info to your gift list if your provider offers this option. If you've got a wedding website this is another great place to add this info.

Suggested wording about your gift list

If you want to explain to your guests that they don't have to buy you a gift, or if you want to tell them a bit about your gift list here are some suggestions:

  • Please don't feel obliged to give us a gift - all we really want is to have a lovely wedding which we can share with our friends and family.
  • Your presence is more important than a present!
  • You probably know that we usually like to do things differently - so it might not be a surprise to you that our gift list is a little bit different too!
  • As we already have a lot of household items, we hope you won't mind us asking for money instead of traditional wedding gifts. We're planning to spend the money on...
  • To celebrate our wedding we're going on a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon which will give us memories we'll always remember. Our honeymoon gift list shows some of the trips we've got planned so you can see how we plan to use your kind wedding gift.
  • We've decided to set up a charity gift list. If you would like to give a gift, this is a perfect way for our wedding to help others less fortunate than us.
